I’m sitting at my cube looking out of my window. Strange that I’m here, because today is the day after Thanksgiving (US), and my company is closed. But I like to come to work on weekends and holidays. It is quiet and calm and peaceful and restful.
I always come in with the intention of doing work. Really, I do! But since my cube is looking out a window at two huge pine trees, I spend a lot of time watching the squirrels, hummingbirds, and people. I have ADD, which means my mind jumps, just like this sentence.
Most people talk about the difficulties of living and working with an ADD brain; it is NOT for the faint of heart. However, I love my brain. It’s interesting and quirky even though it is always spinning at 19,375,028,375 miles per hour. What my brain does is ask questions about everything.
Why is the black squirrel always chasing the brown squirrel? Are they a couple? Have I ever seen a baby squirrel? Do squirrels in temperate California hibernate?
Hibernate – that’s an interesting word. I wonder where it comes from. What other words start with “hib”? Hmmm…this is harder than querulous.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone speak querulous in a sentence? And why is it usually associated with old or infirm people? Same root as query, pretty much the same meaning.
Infirm, infirmary, infernal, internal, eternal, tern, turn, urn, coffee, tea, mug, bug, slug.
What do slugs eat? I just googled it, and apparently they eat leaves, plant material, mushroom, and carrion. Some slugs are hunters and eat other slugs, snails, and earthworms!
Google, goggle, boggle, condo, community, commune, communism, commercial, crass, brass, bass, bassoon, loon, moon, lunar.
This is my mind trying to type a blog post about why I love words. Love, adore, entranced, enthrall, care, heart, hold dear, endear, dote, infatuation, dating, like, belong with, devoted, belonging.
Words. I love them.
